Capacity Building

It's been a while since my last post and a very busy time as it relates to this project. Our team has been meeting regularly to get to know each other, work through logistics, and complete our pre-departure training program. So far, things are going well although there is still some general nervousness on the team. I get the sense that some people are shy because they aren't confident in their English. I think that will go away once we get a chance to meet each other face-to-face. I've been trying to have 1-on-1 calls with my teammates to have more informal conversations outside of the big group meetings. I love the diversity on the team - everyone is bringing unique perspectives to the conversations. We're like a mini version of the UN!

As we learn more about the program and our assignment I have come to the realization that this really isn't about getting the project done although there certainly will be a project deliverable. The more important focus of our time in the Philippines is really around capacity building, skills transfer, and helping them help themselves. The old adage of "Teach them to fish..." is the true driver of our mission. Still no firm information and who our clients will be our what types of projects we will be working on. It's definitely making me rethink my approach to this trip.

Six weeks to go - lots left to do including wrapping up everything with my day job, making sure the family is all set at home, and getting myself ready.
